Tennis Player to Run her First Marathon in New York City

Tennis Player to Run her First Marathon in New York City

Caroline Wozniacki, well known for her adept skill on the tennis court, surprised fans with a recent announcement of pursing another passion, according to an article completed by CBS Sports.  The tennis player, formerly the number one ranking player in the world, announced that she intends to run the New York City Marathon; the event would be her first marathon.  As a result of the strenuous run, Wozniacki has already begun training intensively, which doesn’t take place until the second of November.

Many may be surprised that Wozniacki would require additional training for the marathon, outside of her already accelerated preparation program for tennis.  It is true; she does run quite a bit to prepare herself for matches.  However, the article reported that she has never completed a run longer than ten kilometers, which obviously falls short of the demands of a marathon.  Therefore, despite her thorough efforts to prepare herself for the upcoming U.S. Open, Wozniacki continues to add to her training schedule, as she has a lot of preparation to attend to before she can hope to be successful in the New York Marathon.

The article did not explain why Wozniacki specifically chose the New York City Marathon as her first choice.  However, with the women’s final for the U.S. Open scheduled for the eighth of September, perhaps it merely made sense to Wozniacki to stay in New York and continue to contribute to the city’s sports endeavors.  The article did, however, speculate behind Wozniacki’s reasoning for choosing to run the marathon at this specific time.  The tennis player was engaged to Rory McIlroy—a golf player also always on the edge of the number one ranking in the world—until he broke off the engagement in late May.  Many have speculated that this is what gave Wozniacki the final push to pursue her dream, as a means of distraction.  However, the article denounces this theory, as it includes a statement from Wozniacki to the Associated Press, in which she claims that the two events aren’t tied at all.  To bolster this defense, she claims that her performance in this year’s Wimbledon indicated to her that her body was finally ready, and that she could possibly manage a marathon before the end of the year.

Regardless of her motivation, Wozniacki has chosen New York as her ideal marathon setting and has shown further support of the city in her preparations.  She tweeted asking for financial support for the charity she’s running for—New York based Team for Kids, which features adult runners who donate their winnings towards children living in the city that are in need.

US-Portugal Ratings Success Draws Attention to Potential for US-Germany Match

The game that became the most watched soccer match in the states.

The game that became the most watched soccer match in the states.

According to an article recently completed by The Boston Globe, the ratings for the United States-Portugal draw match drew in enough ratings to earn the game the title of most watched soccer match in the states.  The match drew in a 9.6 household rating and averaged over eighteen million viewers on ESPN.  Excluding events in college football or in the NFL, these statistics helped the game become the most watched program in ESPN history.  To add to this success, another six and a half million viewers tuned in to watch the match on Univision.

The article notes that these statistics are only just the start.  They do not take into consideration crowds that gathered to watch the game in restaurants, bars or at citywide gatherings, as those numbers are very difficult for Nielsen to estimate.  According to Richard Deitsch, Sports Illustrated media columnist, the out-of-home viewership of the game could be as high as thirty million viewers.  Knowing the out-of-home viewership could hold a very strong affect on the ratings, ESPN has recruited independent research firms to conclude this very information.  The broadcaster first did this in the 2010 World Cup, with results adding twenty-three percent to the overall audience.  If this statistic holds to be approximately same for this World Cup, Deitsch’s prediction of thirty million would be very nearly dead on.  However, the findings of the research will not be available until after the 2014 World Cup has come to a close.

This lack of closure on the issue has prompted many analysts to speculate what pull future United States matches will have in the ratings market.  Several speculate that it was the primetime timeslot of the United States-Portugal draw that drew in so many viewers and that expectations shouldn’t run rampant for future games, including the most recent match against Germany, which aired in the middle of the day.  However, several believe that theme of unprecedented statistics, such as the nearly one and a half million viewers who tuned into the game via the WatchESPN app, can lead to only further ratings success for the United States team and ESPN.

Outdoors in New York City

New York's Jazz and Bubbly Brunch Cruise is Classy and Fun for Everyone 21 and Up.

New York’s Jazz and Bubbly Brunch Cruise is Classy and Fun for Everyone 21 and Up.

Summer in New York City presents a myriad of opportunities, from free Yoga classes to trips to Coney Island.  With so many possible endeavors, time spent outdoors in the summer is time well spent.  To inspire a few ideas for outings—other than the traditional visit to bars and restaurants—Metro recently completed an article to offer cheap and easy suggestions.

Several ideas include meals and alcohol, should the participants be of age.  First, the article suggests the Jazz and Bubbly Brunch Cruise.  While the author acknowledges that the typical booze cruise can be anything but elegant, the inclusion of brunch, champagne and a jazz band in tow only helps contribute to keeping this experience classy.  Another brunch suggestion offered is the Local Brunch and Rooftop Farm Tour.  This outing, provided by COFEED, allows the consumer to enjoy brunch while physically seeing the rooftop farm that provided the very produce they are consuming.

For lunch, the article offers a Dos Toros Picnic and Hot Sauce engagement, where the family embarks on a trip to the park of their choice a picnic for a relaxed and low-key afternoon of enjoyment; blanket and post-meal sunbathing are also suggested.  To seek a meal made for you, the article suggests a Schnitzel Sandwich and Smorgasburg; take a breezy ferry trip across the East River and seek out a Smorgasburg for a filling and satisfactory lunch with a good view.

Dinner can be found with a bit of flare at the ‘70s Summer Night Immersive Experience.  During this ‘70s rewind affair, a performance can be enjoyed in a pop-up camper where a barbeque dinner will also be served.  If food isn’t of interest, engaging in a tour of an apiary and sampling a bit of honey beer can also be an enjoyable outing for those who are legal.  If touring with a family, apiary’s can also be an interesting educational experience, sans alcohol.

Finally, two mere outdoor excursions are provided.  For those who miss the ice skating opportunities afforded in the city by the cold weather of the winter, the article suggests a trip through Central Park via roller skates.  Spice up the family trip to the Bronx Zoo by setting up a scavenger hunt that can be both educational and engaging.
